Yayoi Kusama (born March 22, 1929) is a Japanese contemporary artist recognized as one of the most important living artists and the world's top-selling female artist. Known for her signature polka dots, infinity nets, and immersive mirrored rooms, her work blends conceptual art with elements of pop art, surrealism, and abstract expressionism. She began experiencing vivid hallucinations at age 10, which became the foundation of her artistic vision. After moving to New York in 1958, she became a key figure in the 1960s avant-garde scene alongside Andy Warhol. Since 1977, she has voluntarily lived in a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo, using art as therapy. Her Infinity Mirror Rooms and iconic pumpkin sculptures have achieved global acclaim, with the Yayoi Kusama Museum opening in Tokyo in 2017.
